TikTok Shop refundable samples: a US seller's budget

Track the sample purchase, refund and remaining costs together, while keeping customer sales in a separate cohort.

With TikTok Shop refundable samples in the US, creators buy a product and can earn their money back after meeting the sales condition. The seller funds that refund automatically. Budget the sample's product and delivery cost, any fees that remain, and the cash needed when refunds fall due. Under the assumptions below, a refunded $40 sample costs the seller $17 on the standard route or $19.40 with Fast Refund. The $40 refund is a separate cash-flow number.

The short version

  • A refundable sample is purchased first. The creator's own purchase does not count toward the sales condition.
  • Fast Refund can reimburse eligible creators earlier, while leaving the sample's platform commission and later customer-return risk with the seller.
  • Keep a gross refund schedule and a net sample-cost budget. Adding both as campaign expenses would count the same money twice.

How TikTok Shop refundable samples work for US sellers

The US seller guide places refundable offers in Affiliate Center → Open Collaboration → Offer Samples. Choose a product, enable the offer and review the sales condition shown in your account. Content creation alone does not satisfy the sales requirement, and the creator's own purchase is excluded.

The current creator sample guide describes a 120-day window from receipt of the sample. On the standard route, qualifying sales also need time to clear the refund period. Use the dates and order status shown for the specific sample rather than treating its purchase date as the only deadline.

For the seller, the first sample payment is conditional revenue. The US seller terms provide for an automatic refund from the seller's account. Editing a sales condition later does not rewrite the offer already accepted by a creator.

Fast Refund changes both timing and remaining fees

TikTok's Fast Refund guide says eligibility is determined by the platform and can vary by order. Eligible creators can receive processing after the required affiliate-generated sales are delivered, with a T+1 day delay. That is a processing trigger, not a promise that every sample refund reaches a bank account the next day.

The seller terms distinguish the fee treatment: the initial platform commission is returned on a standard refundable-sample refund, but remains a seller cost for Fast Refund. Later returns or chargebacks on the generated customer orders also remain the seller's responsibility. Build that possibility into the offer before counting delivered orders as final profit.

Example: the cost of a refunded $40 sample

Assume a $40 sample purchase, $12 landed product cost, $5 outbound packing and delivery, and an illustrative 6% platform fee of $2.40. There is no tax, buyer-paid shipping, platform subsidy, creator commission on the sample purchase or other charge in this example. These are chosen inputs, not typical costs or a universal fee quote. Check your category and actual US referral fee terms.

Full-cycle sample economics. Positive values are receipts or credits; negative values are payments or costs. Actual settlement entries can occur on different dates.

Net cost after refund−$17.00−$19.40
Full-cycle sample economics. Positive values are receipts or credits; negative values are payments or costs. Actual settlement entries can occur on different dates.

The purchase and refund cancel each other in the full-cycle calculation. The remaining cost is the product, delivery and any commission not returned. Recording the $40 refund as an additional expense on top of those net costs, while omitting the original receipt, would overstate the campaign's cost.

Use the actual amount paid when coupons, shipping charges or taxes are involved. Separate platform-funded credits from amounts you fund yourself, and reconcile the sample order's commission credit before finalizing its cost. The simplified table assumes the creator keeps the sample and assigns no recovery value to it.

Calculate the customer orders needed to recover a sample

Now assume a customer order also sells for $40, with $12 product cost, $5 fulfillment, a 6% referral fee, a chosen 15% creator commission and a $2 allowance for expected net return/refund losses. There is no advertising spend, buyer shipping income, subsidy or tax included in modeled revenue. Contribution before allocating the sample is $40 − $12 − $5 − $2.40 − $6 − $2 = $12.60.

3$37.80$20.80$18.40

Two orders recover either modeled sample cost. If you want at least $15 left after the sample, both cases need three orders: round ($17 + $15) ÷ $12.60 or ($19.40 + $15) ÷ $12.60 upward. Use the threshold options currently available in Seller Center when translating that target into an offer.

A sales requirement is not a profit guarantee. The example's $2 return allowance can be too small, the realized selling price can fall, or customer fulfillment can cost more. Recalculate after a promotion changes the price or creator rate. Our creator commission guide shows how to check the payout the product can afford.

Reserve cash for the amount that will be refunded

Assume 20 creators each paid $40 and all 20 sample orders will receive Fast Refund. The gross refunds total $800. In the simplified model, the remaining sample expense is 20 × $19.40 = $388: $340 of product and delivery plus $48 of retained platform commission.

Put the expected refund dates beside the dates when sample and customer receipts become available. A sale recorded in Seller Center is not necessarily cash already available to cover tomorrow's refund. Use confirmed balances and settlement status when planning the outflow; our settlement report guide explains the distinction.

Stress-test several refunds arriving together and slower customer settlement. Also review refunds caused by product availability problems. The seller terms say removing a product can trigger automatic refunds for active sample opportunities. Do not assume deleting a listing cancels an accepted commitment.

Check refundable offers separately from free-sample rules

The Sample Settings Page guide describes centralized product rules, approval controls and quotas, while explicitly keeping refundable samples in Open Collaboration. The refundable-sample seller guide also says its SKU-level sample controls apply to free samples. A free-sample SKU preference should not be assumed to restrict a refundable offer in the same way.

Review the product, permitted variants and refund condition in the refundable flow itself. Keep an export or record of the accepted offer and original product ID. If a product becomes unavailable, inspect the active sample obligations before changing listings or planning the remaining budget.

Track free samples, refundable purchases still awaiting an outcome and completed refunds separately. Keep any unrefunded sample purchase income distinct from customer sales driven by content. The initial creator purchase does not demonstrate sales to that creator's audience.

Allocate the sample budget in Marqflow

For a campaign forecast, assume the 20 fully refunded Fast Refund samples above produce 100 customer orders in total. The sample allocation is $388 ÷ 100 = $3.88 per acquired order. At the modeled $12.60 contribution before sampling, that leaves $8.72 per order, or $872 across the 100 orders, before fixed overhead.

Enter the allocated sample cost in Other cost per order. In this example, the separate $2 expected net customer-return allowance brings that field to $5.88 if you use it for both reserves. Do not also model the same expected return losses a second time through another return assumption. Use the actual creator rate, category fee and fulfillment cost for the customer order.

Allocate across acquired orders because this cost field applies to every order in the model, including orders later refunded. A per-retained-order report uses a different denominator. If you cannot support a customer-order forecast, keep the sample commitment as a separate campaign budget instead of spreading it across hoped-for sales.

  1. Confirm the product's refund criteria and timing, including any orders eligible for Fast Refund.
  2. Budget the full sample cycle and record gross refund dates separately from net sample cost.
  3. Check active sample obligations before editing criteria, removing products or changing availability.
  4. Reconcile mature customer orders, sample refunds and commission credits before expanding the program.
Frequently asked questions

Questions sellers ask

Does the creator's sample purchase count toward the sales requirement?

No. The US seller guide excludes the creator's own purchase from the sales criteria. Track the refundable sample separately from the customer orders generated by the creator's content.

How many customer orders cover a refundable sample's cost?

Divide the full net sample cost by contribution per customer order and round upward. With $12.60 contribution and sample costs of $17 or $19.40, two orders recover the modeled cost. The result changes with your fees, prices, fulfillment and returns; it is not a platform-wide threshold.

Does every refundable sample get Fast Refund?

No. The platform determines eligibility and it can vary by order. Eligible refunds can be processed after the delivered-sales requirement is met with a T+1 delay. That processing rule does not guarantee next-day bank receipt.
