Choose a profitable TikTok Shop Buy More Save More discount

A basket discount has to fund every item while sharing only the costs that actually fall when products ship together.

Set a TikTok Shop Buy More Save More discount from the contribution you want each qualifying basket to leave. Include the cost of every item, the parcel, creator commission and any seller coupon. In the example below, a two-item basket at 20% off brings in $40 but leaves $7.35. Two separate full-price orders leave $9.50 under the same assumptions. A higher order value alone does not tell you whether the offer pays.

The short version

  • Review the discount offered during product listing before publishing. It can create a promotion with a six-month default duration.
  • Compare contribution per basket and per unit, allowing for the shipping savings and extra costs of a larger order.
  • Check seller coupons and other active offers. TikTok's 80% over-discounting alert is not a store-specific margin floor.

What TikTok Shop Buy More Save More applies to

Buy More Save More, or BMSM, discounts qualifying products when a basket meets a purchase requirement. TikTok's US BMSM and BXGY guide distinguishes it from Buy X, Get Y, where the benefit applies to separate items. Choose the mechanism that matches the offer you mean to fund.

For BMSM, meeting the threshold can discount all qualifying products in the order. A two-item threshold therefore needs checks for baskets of three or four items too. The next unit may require more packing, move the parcel into a higher weight band or trigger a second shipment.

Review the discount created during product listing

The current US guide describes a listing option that prefills a recommended percentage for a Buy 2, Get X% Off offer. You can change it before publishing or enter 0% to create the listing without that promotion. Promotions created through this particular entry point run for six months by default; check and edit their dates in Promotions → Manage Promotions.

Confirm the controls available in your Seller Center rather than assuming every listing looks identical. Before accepting a recommendation, write down its end date and the basket contribution it produces with your costs. The recommendation is an input to review, not evidence that the offer meets your target.

Example: a $25 item in a two-item basket

Assume one product priced at $25, a 6% referral rate and a chosen 15% creator commission. In this simplified example, both percentages apply to item revenue after seller-funded discounts. There is no buyer-paid shipping, platform-funded subsidy, sales tax in modeled revenue or additional program fee. Confirm your category rate and creator terms; BMSM does not create a special fee rate.

The US referral policy and affiliate commission guide explain the underlying charges. Our US seller fees guide covers the wider fee picture. If your actual fee bases differ, calculate the charges separately instead of adding the percentages.

Chosen costs, not seller benchmarks. The return reserve represents expected net losses after relevant refunds and recoveries; it is not a measured return rate.
CostOne-item orderTwo-item basket
Landed product cost$7.00$14.00
Outbound postage$4.50$5.50
Packaging and handling$0.50$0.75
Advertising allocated per acquired order$2.00$2.00
Expected net return/refund cost reserve$1.00$2.00
Total variable dollar costs$15.00$24.25
Chosen costs, not seller benchmarks. The return reserve represents expected net losses after relevant refunds and recoveries; it is not a measured return rate.

The two-item basket shares one parcel and one assumed acquisition cost, while product cost and the return reserve double. These savings are assumptions to test. If two items ship separately or a larger basket costs more to acquire, replace those inputs.

Contribution before fixed overhead = modeled item revenue × 79% − variable dollar costs. Calculations retain precision until the displayed cents.
OfferItemsItem revenueContribution
Full-price single item1$25.00$4.75
Two items, no discount2$50.00$15.25
Two items, 10% off2$45.00$11.30
Two items, 20% off2$40.00$7.35
Two items, 40% off2$30.00−$0.55
Contribution before fixed overhead = modeled item revenue × 79% − variable dollar costs. Calculations retain precision until the displayed cents.

Two separate full-price orders contribute 2 × $4.75 = $9.50. The 10% basket contributes $1.80 more, while the 20% basket contributes $2.15 less. That comparison is useful when a bundle replaces purchases that might otherwise happen at full price. It does not prove those two orders would actually occur.

If the promotion persuades a shopper who would have bought one unit to buy two, the 20% offer raises contribution per acquired order from $4.75 to $7.35. It still consumes twice the stock and leaves less per unit. Track both measures, especially when inventory or fulfillment capacity is tight.

Set a dollar target before choosing the percentage

Suppose you want at least $10 contribution from the two-item basket. With the costs above, the maximum discount is 1 − ($24.25 + $10) ÷ ($50 × 0.79) = about 13.29%. Choose a supported discount below that ceiling rather than rounding it upward. A 13% offer leaves $10.115, shown as $10.12.

A 13% setting has very little headroom above the chosen target. Increase postage by $0.50 and the contribution falls by $0.50. Run a higher-cost case for shipping, acquisition and returns before deciding how much of the mathematical ceiling to use. Check each quantity tier separately.

Test coupon stacking and the 80% warning

A qualifying $3 seller coupon changes the 13% example. The basket falls from $43.50 to $40.50 in modeled item revenue, leaving $7.745, or $7.75 displayed. Under that exact coupon scenario, the mathematical BMSM ceiling for the $10 target falls to about 7.29%. Entering 7% rather than 13% would restore the same $43.50 revenue after the coupon.

Use TikTok's campaign price breakdown to inspect the product, cart and coupon layers that actually apply. Separate seller-funded discounts from platform-funded benefits. The shopper's final price and the seller's proceeds can differ; subtract only the cost you bear and verify the funding in the order detail.

The BMSM guide says the system alerts you before publishing when combined discounts reach 80% or more. Our 40% example already loses $0.55 before overhead. The alert does not use this product's costs or your contribution target.

Do not rely on a configured Safety Price to stop every seller-funded offer either. The US Price Watch guide limits automatic protection to eligible platform-funded Product Incentives. Seller-funded promotions are monitored and diagnosed, but are not automatically blocked or changed by that protection. Review the actual combination in the Promotion Simulator and confirm account-specific rules.

Model the basket in Marqflow with one parcel cost

Marqflow models one offer per order. For this identical two-item example, represent the basket as a combined $50 offer with $14 product cost, $6.25 fulfillment including postage and packing, $2 advertising and a separate $2 expected net return-cost reserve. Keep the assumed referral and creator rates at 6% and 15% when reproducing the table. One modeled order means one two-item basket, not one physical unit.

Use one method for expected return losses: if the $2 reserve already includes them, do not add the same losses again through another return assumption. Mixed products with different commission rates, split shipments and partial returns need separate calculations. This combined-offer approximation does not reproduce TikTok's promotion eligibility or automatically apply its stacking rules.

The discount calculator can help compare the offer's contribution at different discounts. Check the basket eligibility and checkout price in Seller Center alongside the economic model.

What to check after a promotion test

  1. Record the qualifying products, customer segment, thresholds, dates and other promotions that were active during the test.
  2. Compare baskets with the same quantity and traffic source, including the seller-funded discount and effective creator commission.
  3. Replace forecast parcel and acquisition costs with actual costs; include partial refunds and later fee adjustments when the cohort matures.
  4. Review contribution per order, per unit and in total, alongside units sold and available stock. Keep the full-price comparison as a reference, not an assumed causal result.
Frequently asked questions

Questions sellers ask

Can I skip the Buy 2, Get X% Off promotion when listing a product?

The US guide says to set the listing-flow discount to 0% to publish without creating that promotion. If you accept a discount, review its dates: this entry point uses a six-month default duration.

Does Buy More Save More discount only the extra item?

BMSM applies its benefit to the qualifying products once the basket meets the requirement, rather than only discounting the item that crosses the threshold. Check larger qualifying baskets as well as the minimum quantity.

Does TikTok's over-discounting alert guarantee a profitable offer?

No. The BMSM alert is triggered at a combined discount of 80% or more. Your costs can make a much smaller discount unprofitable. Calculate the basket contribution using actual costs and review stacked seller-funded discounts.
