TikTok Shop refunds: why a returned order still costs money

A refund reverses the sale. It does not necessarily reverse the shipping label, advertising or damage to the returned product. Separate recovered costs from costs you keep paying to see whether a product can handle more volume.
The short version
- Separate retained orders from shipped orders.
- Ads and outbound fulfilment can remain costs on a return.
- Inventory recovery is an assumption, not a platform guarantee.
What comes back — and what does not
Check reversed revenue, fee refunds, creator adjustments, recovered inventory and costs that remain. A sealed return is different from a used item. A cancellation before shipment is different from a return after delivery. Putting all three under one percentage is a simplification, useful for planning but not for reconciling a statement.
| Item | Question |
|---|---|
| Revenue | Full or partial refund? |
| Platform fee | What is refunded and what administration charge remains? |
| Creator payout | Has estimated commission been adjusted? |
| Inventory | What value can be recovered by resale? |
| Fulfilment | Which outbound and reverse costs remain? |
| Advertising | Was the spend already incurred? |
One returned $40 order
Use our illustrative US product: $40 price, $12 COGS, $4 fulfilment, $6 advertising and 10% creator commission. Suppose it is fully refunded, return processing costs $3 and 90% of inventory cost is recoverable. For the ordinary 6% referral case, the modelled refund administration charge is $0.48 under the official policy linked below.
| Cost that remains | Amount |
|---|---|
| Advertising | $6.00 |
| Outbound fulfilment | $4.00 |
| Return processing | $3.00 |
| Inventory loss: 10% × $12 | $1.20 |
| Refund administration | $0.48 |
| Loss on this return | $14.68 |
A kept order earns $11.60; this return loses $14.68. Replacing a kept order with a returned one therefore reduces contribution by $26.28. Looking only at the $14.68 modelled loss misses the profit that the original sale was expected to earn. Recovered inventory value is not necessarily cash already received.
What 100 shipped orders look like
| Return rate | Kept | Returned | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 100 | 0 | $1,160.00 |
| 5% | 95 | 5 | $1,028.60 |
| 10% | 90 | 10 | $897.20 |
| 20% | 80 | 20 | $634.40 |
A recent cohort can look better simply because its returns have not arrived yet. Compare cohorts at similar maturity and record the cut-off date. Do not label a forecast return rate as observed data.
Know the model’s assumptions
For opened products that cannot be resold, 90% recovery may be optimistic. Keep a downside estimate for the additional inventory loss. Avoid charging a product write-off again inside return processing: that counts the same loss twice.
What to fix before scaling
- Group return reasons by SKU: expectations, sizing, damage and operational mistakes.
- Compare the listing and creator claims with the delivered product. Correct repeated mismatches before buying more traffic.
- Measure recoverable inventory value and handling cost from actual returns.
- Recalculate allowable CPA and creator commission using a mature return rate.

Questions sellers ask
Should I remove ads for refunded orders?
Only if that spend is actually refunded or was not incurred. Planning models usually charge ads to acquired orders while excluding refunded sales from retained revenue.
Is 5% a recommended return rate?
No. A default is an example, not a market benchmark. Use mature cohorts from your own shop and a plausible downside case.
